JAMMU, Mar 6: A three-day national seminar on ‘Biodiversity: Sustainable Development and Conservation’ began today at Jammu University.
Prof Y R Malhotra, former Vice Chancellor of JU and ex-MLC, formally inaugurated the seminar, which is being organized by the Department of Zoology in collaboration with J&K Fisheries Department.
Speaking during the inaugural function, Prof Y R Malhotra highlighted the importance of Biodiversity, which is the basic of all our needs as our livestock comes from this. He further emphasized the relevance of 3 F’s- Food, Fibre and Fuel which are the three requirements of man in perpetuating. He also spoke on the endangered species and how the habitats of various species are disturbed due to human interference.
In his presidential remarks, Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, JU Vice Chancellor, hoped that the seminar would provide students and researchers a platform where they can share their thoughts and interact with the eminent scientists and researchers.
Earlier, Prof N K Tripathi threw light on the relevance of Biodiversity and Sustainable Development and conservation.
Prof Kuldeep K Sharma, Head, Department of Zoology and Convener of the National Seminar, highlighted various factors responsible for disturbing the aquatic ecosystem.
On this occasion, prizes were also distributed among the winners of Poster Making competition and Quiz Competition. In Poster Making Category, First, Second and Third Prizes were won by Nazma Khan, Surbhi Sharma, and Shabina Irshad Minto from the Department of Zoology, JU.  Winning team of the quiz competition comprised of Chandni, Ruhi Jan and Neha.
The vote of thanks was presented by Prof Roopma Gandotra.
A total of 250 participants from various Universities, colleges and Fishery Department attended the session.
