SRINAGAR, Mar 15: Judge, Supreme Court of India (Chairman, Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee of Supreme Court), Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar in presence of Chief Justice of J&K High Court (Patron in Chief Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee J&K), Justice M.M. Kumar, Executive Chairman, J&K State Legal Services Authority, Justice Virender Singh, Chairman Mediation Monitoring Committee, Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir, Member, Mediation Monitoring Committee, Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar and Member Mediation Monitoring Committee, Justice Tashi Rabstan inaugurated the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Centre, constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.23 crore under 13th Finance Commission in the under construction District Court Complex, Mominabad Srinagar today.
Justice Nijjar, while speaking on the occasion, highlighted the importance of settling disputes through ADR system particularly through mediation and Lok Adalats. He said that settlement of disputes and conflicts through ADR system creates a win win situation and no one is loser in the process.
Justice Nijjar said, “our job is to find solution not winner or loser and good offices of Judges can do it”. Lauding the role of Lok Adalat system, he said that thousands of cases are solved within a day or two through this system and Supreme Court recently did three lakh cases in one day, saying that this tool can be used to bring peace and harmony in the society.
Justice M.M. Kumar while addressing the gathering laid emphasis on the importance of ADR, mediation and its relevance in the process of administration of justice. He impressed upon the Judicial Officers and lawyers community to strengthen the dispute resolution through ADR. He also emphasised on opening up such ADR Centres in other districts of the State.
Justice Kumar said that this is the golden day in the history of Jammu and Kashmir High Court when ADR Centre is being opened for facilitating people in solving cases through mediation and arbitration. He said that traditional cases involve high cost, hostility and time whileas mediation proves cheaper and less time consuming.
Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir, Chairman High Court Monitoring Committee briefed the gathering about the achievement of ADR Centre in solving the dispute across the State. He also highlighted the vision plan of ADR Centre for the year 2014-2015.
Later, Justice Attar presented vote of thanks and enlightened the gathering with the importance of ADR Centre. He said that the deliberations of dignitaries were thought provoking saying that mediation has a message for all of us aimed at making peace with yourself and others around.
The occasion was also graced by other Judges of High Court including Justice Hasnain Masoodi, Justice A.M. Magray, Justice D.S. Thakur, Justice Tashi Rabstan, Justice B.L. Bhat, Justice J.R. Kotwal. Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation and Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar were also present on the occasion.
