JAMMU, Oct 15: Convenor, Tawi Andolan, Chander Mohan Sharma today accused the State Government for totally ignoring the river Tawi in flood management despite the fact that the river which was heavily flooded last month has caused losses worth several crores of rupees to infrastructure and public property.
Talking to reporters here, today, along with other members of the Andolan, Mr Sharma said it is shocking to note that during a recent advertisement issued by State Government through its Information Department under the caption “ Rebuilding J&K’’ and reconstruction of public infrastructure.
He said the State Government has sought Rs 4038 crore assistance for the flood management of river Jhelum in Kashmir Valley and river Chenab in Jammu while the river Tawi which created a lot of devastation in Jammu has been totally ignored.
Mr Sharma, while describing this as shocking said there is no mention of river Tawi which was heavily flooded and has caused loss of hundreds of crores to infrastructure and property.
Mr Sharma said there was such a huge impact of floods that one complete bridge and another one half of the bridge were washed away on river Tawi. It is strange that ministers and senior officers have undertaken number of visits to localities on both sides of the river Tawi yet it has been kept away of reconstruction plan.
He demanded that the State Government should immediately do holistic appraisal of Flood Control Management of river Tawi and bring Tawi, Dewak and Bhaskar within the proposed reconstruction plan.
Sharma, while deploring the discriminatory attitude of the Government towards Jammu while dealing with issues of natural calamities warned that Tawi Andolan will intensify its movement in case the problem is not looked into.
