SRINAGAR, June 26: The first All India National Sport Lead Climbing competition concluded at Nowgam, here.
The competition, organized by Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department in collaboration with Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) at Sport Climbing Wall at TRC Nowgam, was attended by 100 climbers from 22 States.
During the competition, the participants competed in sub-junior, junior, men and women categories.
All the seven zones of IMF including East zone featuring 12 climbers, West Zone with 28 climbers, North Zone with 39 climbers, South Zone with 4 climbers, North East Zone with 10 climbers and Services Zone with 6 climbers and Police Zone having 5 climbers, participated in the competitions.
Director Tourism Kashmir Mahmood A Shah presided over the concluding ceremony and gave away medals, trophies and certificates to winners and participants.
During the competitions, J&K’ Shivani Charak won gold in Women’s Open Lead event. No other climber could top the wall. Siddimanerikar and Dhanashri Lekurwale, both of Maharashtra, secured 2nd and 3rd places. Shilpa Charak, another climber of Mountaineering Association of J&K, climbed well to finish at the 6th place.
Another notable performance was given by Ajay Deep Singh in the Boys category. Pitted against some international climbers Ajay Deep kept his cool to enter the final round by securing 3rd place in the semifinal. However, he could not repeat his performance in the final and slipped to the 4th place.
Similarly, four other climbers of the Association, Rudra Partap Singh and Randeep Singh in the Sub Junior Boys Category, Asma Gul in the Girls category and Mrityunjay Sharma in the Men’s category also displayed good technique and temperament to enter the final rounds in their respective categories but finally could secure only 5th, 9th , 6th and 11th positions respectively.
Shivani Charak, who has been selected to represent India in the 18th Asian Games to be held at Jakarta-Palenbang (Indonesia) from August 18 to September 2, 2018 will now proceed to Bhuvneshwar (Orissa) for her special training for the Asian Games.
