NEW DELHI, July 30 : A Sikh deputation led by Delhi State BJP President Satish Upadhyay, MLA Sardar R.P. Singh, Secretary Delhi BJP Prof. Gurmohinder Singh, Secretary Delhi BJP Sardarni Amarjeet Kaur, Convener Sikh Cell of Delhi BJP Sardar Kulwinder Singh and other prominent leaders today called on Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, MoS in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Space & Atomic Energy, and handed over to him a memorandum expressing their concerns and views over the incident of violence against the Sikh community in Saharanpur and requested that the same memorandum be placed before the Prime Minister and other senior members of the Union Ministry.
Dr Jitendra Singh gave them a patient hearing and assured them that Government stands for communal harmony and disapproves of the violence against any community. He said that the Government and the Home Ministry have already taken cognizance of the episode and taken necessary steps in the matter.
While the Government has urged upon Uttar Pradesh Government to promptly bring the situation under control, Dr Jitendra Singh also appealed to all sections of society to exercise restrain and called upon different social groups, and community leaders to cooperate in restoring calm.
Mutual co-existence and brotherhood is the greatest hallmark of Indian society and should under no circumstances be allowed to get compromised, said Dr Jitendra Singh.
In the memorandum submitted to the MoS (PMO), a judicial probe has been demanded into the incident by a sitting High Court judge. The memorandum further states that three precious lives were lost and 25 people were seriously injured whereas another 200 persons from Sikh community suffered from business loss because of their shops getting burnt or looted.
The memorandum further alleges that the Akhilesh Yadav Government in Uttar Pradesh has always tried to absolve a particular community from the responsibility of creating riots as a result of which in the last two years there have been 100 incidents of communal flare ups.
Referring to the causes of riots on July 26, the memorandum claims that there has been a long standing dispute of possession of a piece of land between two local communities and the Allahabad High Court had settled the matter of possession in favour of Sikh community, only after which the members of the community started construction of Gurudwara at the site. The memorandum accused the Akhilesh Yadav Government of appeasement towards another community of the area resulting in discrimination against this community.
