Sikhs protest at Gangyal, Kunjwani; block highway

JAMMU, Oct 23: Members of  Sikh community held strong protest demonstrations at Gangyal and Kunjwani and disrupted the movement of vehicles on Jammu-Pathankote National Highway for several hours here today.
A large number of people including women assembled at Gangyal,  near Digiana  area at around 12.30 pm and started protest demonstration against the act of showing disrespect to the Holy Guru Granth Sahib by some miscreants at Faridkote in Punjab recently. The protesters came out on the busy National Highway at Gangyal, just 300 mts  ahead of Digiana Ashram and raised barricades on the road. They also burnt  tyres on the highway and later sat on dharna to lodge their protest and express anger.
The police party from Gangyal and Gandhi Nagar Police Stations reached the spot but the protesters whose number  went on increasing refused to lift dharna. They were shouting slogans demanding  stern action against the accused involved in the act. They raised slogans against Badal  Govt in Punjab and BJP. They shouted slogans against Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and BJP leadership. Huge traffic jam was created on both sides of the highway. The traffic police authorities had to divert  traffic via Kunjwani-Bypass and Greater Kailash and Marble Market roads. The traffic could be restored after about four hours of protest.
Meanwhile, another protest demonstration was held  at Kunjwani Bypass by another group of Sikh community members on the same issue. The protesters blocked the road for about an hour and disrupted movement of  vehicular traffic, causing  inconvenience to the general public.
