JAMMU, Jan 7: The birth anniversary of 10th Guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji was celebrated with great enthusiasm and religious fervor across the State today.
The main function was held at Gurdwara Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Chand Nagar (Gumat) here today. It was organised by District Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (DGPC) Jammu, with the support and cooperation of various Sikh bodies. A large number of members of the community including women and children devotees attended the programme.
The prominent Sikh community leaders projected the demand of complete holiday on the birthday of Shri Guru Gobind Singh under Negotiable Instrument Act, appointment of Minority Commission, representation to Sikh member in State Cabinet, PSC and SSRB, permanent settlement of uprooted families of PoK of 1947 and representation to their wards in Government jobs and professional colleges.
On this occasion, Ragi Jathas from Shri Darbar Sahib ( Amritsar) and other places recited Gurbani. Bhai Nirmal Singh ji Khalsa from Amritsar, Bhai Satinder Vir Singh (Asr) among others recited ‘Gurbani Parth’ and the Sangat was spell bound by their melodious voice and music.
Singh Sahib Giani Maan Singh ji, Head Granthi from Darbar Sahib Amarisar threw light on the Sikh history  and golden realism of Sikhism. Several other noted Sikh religious scholars also spoke on the occasion and projected demands of the community.
Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Shantmanu, officiating chairman of Distt Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, assisted by DGPC members was also present and supervised the arrangements of celebrations. BJP MLAs, Jammu East Rajesh Gupta, Jammu West Sat Sharma, MLA Gandhinagar Kavinder Gupta and MLA R S Pura Gangan Bhagat also offered special prayers at the Gurdwara and interacted with the community members and DPGC members.  They assured full cooperation and support.
A free community Langar was also organised for the devotees. Members including Dalip Singh and Manjit Singh extended gratitude to the Divisional Commissioner and others for their cooperation for the smooth conduct of function.
Similar functions were held at various other Gurdwaras and places in the districts where people offered special prayers. Gurdwaras at Nanak Nagar, Rehari Chungi, Talab Tillo and Digiana were highly decorated on the occasion of Gurpurab. Huge rush of devotees was witnessed at these religious places since morning.
Reports from other areas including Kathua, R S Pura, Samba, Ramgarh, Akhnoor, Nowshera, Rajouri, Udhampur (Gurdwara Omara Morh),  Batote and parts of Kashmir said that several functions were held on the occasion of Gurpurab today. At Poonch, a religious procession was taken out by the Sikh community members. They demanded release of those arrested during 1984 riots.
Meanwhile, members of Sikh Youth Wing of Sikh Missionary College Circle Jammu celebrated Gurpurab in unique gesture by donating washing machine  and eatables to the inhabitants of Varidh Ashram Amphalla, Jammu today.
