JAMMU, Mar 9: A variety of topics like Employees Act, Payment of Gratuity, Minimum Wages & Payment of Wages Act, Child Labour Act and Contract Labour were deliberated in the light of Judicial Decisions, on the second day of two-day special workshop on Labour Laws, organized by State Judicial Academy (SJA).
Renowned expert on Labour Laws and author of various authoritative books, Prof (Dr) SC Srivastava, was the key resource person, who deliberated on the subject at length and shared his experiences right from being a consultant to ILO, Planning Commission of India, Indian Law Institute and Law Commission of India to a practicing Advocate at Supreme Court Bar.
The function was presided over by SJA Director, Suresh Kumar Sharma, who is also Registrar General of the State High Court.
In his introductory remarks, Sharma highlighted the need for training, as continuous updating of knowledge is the need of the hour. Though there are plethora of laws yet India is termed as soft state because the implementation of the laws on the ground is minimal, he said.
He said that the emerging issues of inter state labour especially in the unorganised sector as well as unskilled and semi-skilled labour being exploited at the hands of unregistered contractors is yet another area of concern.
The two-day workshop also covered topics, such as ‘Labour Laws and Recent developments’, Industrial Conflicts and its Resolution, Approaches and Emerging Issues, Trade Unions Act and Disciplinary Approaches of Constitutional Courts.
The lectures were followed by interactive Question-Answer Session.
A total of 55 candidates including Shezad Azim, District and Sessions Judge, Ashraf Khan, PO Passenger Tax and Establishment Court, Kusum Lata Pandita, Sub-Judge, MA Alnasir Sub-Judge, Yahya Firdous, Sub-Judge, Rajni Sharma, Sub-Judge, Nitu Gupta, Deputy Labour Commissioner Jammu besides Assistant Labour Commissioners, Labour Officers and Labour Inspectors of Jammu province, participated in the workshop.
