SRINAGAR, Oct 10: Creating history in the periphery medical care, a team of oncologists from SKIMS arrived in District Hospital (DH) Anantnag and conducted a cancer surgery for first time in a South Kashmir hospital.
Eight oncology surgeons, headed by HoD Oncology, SKIMS Srinagar, Dr Altaf Haji, is operating five cancer patients that include two breast cancers, and each thyroid, intestinal and piratical cancer patients.
This is an initiative by the Director Health Services Kashmir and Oncology Department of SKIMS, to commence, such surgeries at district levels.
“Highly professional and experienced doctors will operate at the district hospitals so that patients receive care at the doorsteps,” said Director Health Services Kashmir, Dr Saleem ur Rehmaan. “Moreover, this will also get the surgeons at these hospitals trained.
The team of doctors has earlier visited North Kashmir districts of Handwara and Baramulla.
The patients have expressed their gratitude as their months of time have been saved. Nusrat Jan, a 34 year old breast cancer patient, was earlier in August operated at District Hospital Baramulla.
“It would have taken us months had we waited for our date in SKIMS. She was taken to Baramulla hospital and operated there,” said her sister.
It is second surgery of this Anantnag residents and her family rejoice as their precious treatment has been saved. “She is being operated inside without waiting for long time at Srinagar, it is in our town now,” says her sister while waiting outside operation theater.
This is not however area specific initiative, a doctor said, but we choose patients and treats them earliest. “This not less than innovation for our hospital as our surgeons is getting first-hand experience from the renowned doctors,” said Dr Majeed Merab, Medical Superintendent, District Hospital, Anantnag.
“This initiative to provide treatment at doorsteps for the patients of cancer who have to suffer otherwise by waiting for months together in Srinagar or other places outside State, will continue in future,” he said.
