*Exhorts rural youth to make mark in soccer

VIJAYPUR Sept 16: Declaring open Baba Hasal Dev Memorial Football Tournament, former Minister and State Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, Surjeet Singh Slathia exhorted youth to participate in sports in a big way along side academics, here today.
‘Sports are not only imperative for overall physical and mental growth but these have immense potential in career advancement as well’, Mr Slathia said at the inaugural function, held at Gurah Slathia this morning.
The former Minister said football and hockey are the games being played in rural areas for years, given the wide open playfields in abundance.
He hoped the youth will take benefit from such facilities at their door-steps and make a mark in the game, which has gained worldwide popularity with soccer remaining one of the prime sports.
Mr Slathia, who was chief guest at the inaugural match, appreciated the organisers for holding such an impressive event and said that engaging youth in traditional sports activities will improve their physical growth and motivate them to participate in competitions at the state and the national levels.
He also lauded enthusiasm among the players and the sports, saying this is reassuring that the game holds big promise for talented youth. He congratulated the competitors for making the event live and breath-taking by putting in their best in the game.
Mr Slahtia told the sports enthusiasts, especially the budding footballers that the tournament will serve as a source of inspiration for them. He hoped they will learn from the established players and emulate their spirit. He said in this era of competition the youth have to be best in their chosen spheres.
Besides large number of sports enthusiasts, former Sarpanches, Isher Singh, Rampal Sharma, Mohan Lal Sharma, Brijpal Singh and Subhash Chander Sharma, besides City President Vijaypur National Conference, Sodagar Gupta were present.
The organisers of the event, Jatinder Singh Makhnu, Shekhar Slathia, Sudershan Slathia, Mithu Singh Slathia and Dayanidhi Singh Slathia introduced the participating players to the chief guest and spelled out broad details of the tournament.
