SRINAGAR, Sept 20: A soldier was killed and three others injured in a sniper fire by Pakistani troops at Keran sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district today.
Sources said that Pakistan Rangers opened sniper fire at 5/9 GR unit of Army near Pimple post in Keran sector along the LoC today. Four soldiers were injured and all of them were airlifted to Army’s 92-base hospital at Badamibagh in Srinagar for treatment.
One of the injured identified as Sepoy Rajesh Khatri of Dailekh Nepal was declared as brought dead by the doctors at the hospital. The others are being treated in the hospital. Army retaliated the fire and targeted the Pakistani posts and intermittent firing was going on in the area.
The sniping of soldiers by Pakistani troops has increased this year along the LoC in Kashmir. Sources said that Pakistani troops are frustrated after Indian troops this year foiled infiltration of militants from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) along the LoC. They said that after continued failure following stepped up security along the LoC, Pakistani troops are resorting to such tactics.
Sources said that they are also resorting to ceasefire violations to push in militants by providing them cover fire. They, however, said that the troops are on heightened alert and ready to foil Pakistani troops’ and militant designs.
Four days back Army foiled a major infiltration bid in Macchil sector killing two infiltrators while rest of the members of the group fled back to PoK.
And Police today arrested a militant of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit in Anantnag district of South Kashmir.
A joint team of police, Army’s 1- Rashtriya Rifles (RR), 3RR and 90th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) following a tip off raided a militant hideout at Bijbehara and apprehended the militant.
The militant has been identified as Aadil Hussain alias Badam son of Ghulam Hassan of Jablipur, Bijbehara in Anantnag.
A police spokesman said here that Aadil Hussain of Hizbul Mujahideen was arrested by police, Army and CRPF in a joint operation in Bijbehara today. However, a Hizbul Mujahideen spokesman said that Adil was not the militant of the outfit.
Security forces this year achieved major success against the militants and killed 146 of them so far including 8 top commanders. Some of the local militants and Over Ground Workers (OGWs) were also arrested after intense pressure put on them due to ‘Operation All Out’ that was launched two months ago.
