South Asian Amateur Chess C’ship in Jammu from Sept 1 to 6

JAMMU, Aug 11: All J&K Chess Association is organizing South Asian Amateur Chess Championship in Jammu at Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust, Channi Himmat, which was earlier scheduled at Srinagar from September 1 to 6.
This was informed by Atul Kumar Gupta, President, All J&K Chess Association while interacting with media persons, here today.
“More than 500 players including officials and coaches from SAARC Countries have confirmed their participation including 40 players from J&K. Most of the players will be from India as Indian players have got wonderful opportunity to play an international event at home turf. J&K players will get big exposure with this event which is giving them opportunity to play an International event at their home State. It is perhaps the biggest sports event to be organized in J&K”, Gupta stated.
He stated that cash prizes worth Rs 10 lakh will be distributed among the winners, he said, adding that the event will be organized by All J&K Chess Association on behalf of AICF under the banner of Asian Chess Federation. The event is a recognized official International event by World Chess Federation (FIDE), he added.
Gupta informed that Srivatsan from Chennai has been appointed by Asian Federation as chief arbiter of this event and he will be assisted by 11 other deputy arbiters.

Meanwhile, Meenal Gupta, Gold medalist in under-14 girls category during Commonwealth Chess Championship, which was recently held at Sri Lanka was honoured on the occasion by members of the Association for bringing laurels to State and Country.
