JAMMU Aug 30: Provincial President National Conference, Devender Singh Rana on Friday said that wrestling continues to be popular with Indian youth despite certain setbacks to the game at the international level.
“Being one of the oldest sporting discipline, wrestling remains a passion with its practitioners and fans whose number is no less, notwithstanding the challenge being posed by other popular games”, the Provincial President said while inaugurating Raja Mandleek Dangal at Baran in Block Bhalwal near here this afternoon.
Reputed wrestlers from Amritsar, Chandigarh, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir Police participated in the event that has caught the imagination of sports lovers from across the region.
Mr Rana expressed hope that the fierce competition between veterans in the game will provide much needed motivation and inspiration to the budding wrestlers, who have been putting their hard toil to excel in wrestling. He urged the youngsters to participate in the game in a big way and prepare for various national and international events with a sense of commitment.
The Provincial President expressed satisfaction over the keennes being evinced by rural youth in various sports and said this will not only keep them in good stead physically but also sharpen their mental growth. Sports as a career has emerged as a big option for enterprising youth in this era, he said and referred to big mark made by young people in various games at national and international level.
While hailing efforts of the Government to promote rural sports, Mr Rana welcomed the suggestion for setting up of Rural Sports Directorate to give fillip to various games. He said that a collective effort will be made to plead the case before the government for taking a view in this regard.
Those who were present on the occasion prominent among others included Sr. Vice President Rattan Lal Gupta, District President Jammu Rural Satpal Lakhotra, MLA Raipur Domana Bharat Bhushan, Block President Bhalwal KD Singh, Chairman Dangal Committee Balwant Singh , Sapranchs Dalbir Singh, Ch. Mumtaz, Raj Singh, Ch. Rehmat Ali, Dhanatar Singh , Pritam Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Amarnath and other members of the Dangal Committee.
