SRINAGAR:The national highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was closed today following landslides at several places early this morning.
A traffic police official told that Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed following landslides, triggered by heavy rains, at Penthal and few other places. Vehicles, carrying Amarnath pilgrims from Jammu, were stopped at several places. Similarly vehicles, which left Kashmir were also stopped on this side of the Jawahar tunnel.
He said Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the mainenance of the highway, has pressed into service sophisticated machine and men to clear the landslides.
Official said it will take about six hours to clear the landslides on the highway.
When the highway will be put through, yatris will be allowed first. This was for the second time the highway was closed due to landslides since the commencement of the annual Amarnath pilgrims from July 2. On July 11, the highway was closed after a portion of the road was damaged between Ramban and Ramsu.However, the historic Mughal road, connecting the Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region was through for traffic, he said.
