SRINAGAR, Nov 9: The Srinagar Open Tennis Championship began at the Gindun Tennis Courts in Rajbagh, here today, with a total of 10 matches played on the opening day.
A standout match featured Irfan Bhat and Dilbagh Singh, where the two battled through a best-of-three set encounter lasting nearly three hours. After shifting won by back and forth, Singh won by 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Another exciting match saw Rouf Ahmad defeating Mir Jameel by 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in a duel lasting 2 hours and 25 minutes. Gurmit Singh also progressed to the quarterfinals, overcoming Sajad Bhat in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Singh will face Dilbagh Singh in the next round.
Defending champion Inayat Jehangir and last year’s runner-up Haider Hussain are both on track for a potential title rematch. Both secured straight-set victories to advance to the semifinals. Hussain faced a brief scare in his quarterfinal match, trailing by 2-5 in the second set against Shubhkarman Singh. However, he rallied back to win by 6-1, 7-5.
The event, organized by the District Lawn Tennis Association under the Jammu and Kashmir Lawn Tennis Association, has become a regular feature in Kashmir’s tennis scene.
