JAMMU, Nov 30: The Jammu University teachers did not attend the election training today as standoff continues between JU Teachers Association and the District Election authorities over deployment of university teachers on poll duty.
More than nine hundred JU employees, including around three dozen teachers, have been asked to report for training and election duty during the ongoing Assembly elections.
The JUTA has already conveyed its reservations to the JU Registrar over deployment of the university teachers for election duty owing to various reasons, including their engagement in research projects as well as affiliation of a few with political parties.
However, the District Election authorities have rejected the JUTA plea and made it clear that the university employees will have to attend the poll duty. Refusal of JU employees, including teachers, to attend the poll duty will invite punitive action, sources in the District Election Office told the Excelsior.
In view of the increased number of polling stations, we need more staff and therefore not only the universities but also Central Government and PSU employees are being deployed on election duty, sources added.
Informing that the JU has submitted rectified list of its employees for their deployment on poll duty, the sources further said that the teachers having open affiliation with any political parties may be exempted from the poll assignment.
