RAMBAN, Nov 18: Star XI Chamalwas triumphed in the Annual Captain Atul Somra Cricket Cup, clinching the championship in a thrilling final held today in Banihal.
The tournament, named after Captain Atul Somra, a martyr who made the ultimate sacrifice during a counter-terrorist operation in 2002, attracted 32 teams from across the region. Star XI Chamalwas defeated Shah-e-Asrar in the final, with the latter being honored as the runner-up for their exceptional performance throughout the competition.
The 12-day event was organized by the Indian Army in collaboration with the civil administration. The primary goal was to promote drug de-addiction, physical fitness, and national integration while providing local youth with a platform to showcase their sporting talents and channel their energy positively.
The closing ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including ZPEO Banihal Mohammad Saidullah Mir, SDPO Manjit Singh, SHO Ashiq Bukhari, and BMO Sayed Ismail. They praised the Army for organizing the event and emphasized its role in fostering communal harmony and engaging youth in constructive activities. The officials also expressed their commitment to supporting similar future events aimed at empowering the youth and promoting a drug-free lifestyle.
The winning team, Star XI Chamalwas, received the championship trophy, medals, and certificates, while Shah-e-Asrar was acknowledged for their outstanding performance throughout the tournament.
