JAMMU, Aug 25: Organized by J&K Academy of Art, Culture and languages, the maiden five-day State Theatre Festival concluded with the performance of ‘Kirayedar’, a Rajneesh Gupta’s adaptation of Rajinder Singh Bedi’s original Radio play  Naqle- Makani in Hindustani, at the Abhinav Theatre, here today.
Staged under the banner of Chanderbhaga Sanskriti Manch and directed by Rajneesh Gupta and Meera Tapasavi, today’s play was a treat for the display of superb acting prowess by the duo of amateur actors of the winter capital: Meera Tapasavi and Balwinder Singh, who carried their respective roles with aplomb.
The plot revolved around a young couple who after husband’s posting in the cosmopolitan Mumbai, move into a room previously rented by a nachne-gane wali and are subjected to a great psychological harassment due to the frequent visits of ‘old customers’. Facing challenges and tribulations, the couple initially thinks of leaving and going back to the village but in the end, decide to take on to the challenge and face the world.
Meera Tapasavi as the young wife Salma mirrored the psycho-social trauma faced by a God fearing wife with her measured speech, controlled display of emotions while Balwinder Singh as Hamid was equally brilliant in his role.
Other members of the cast who also gave equally good performances included Varun Sharma and Sudesh Thakur as Sharabis, Rajni Bhatti as Shamshad Begum,  Aditya Bhanu as Paan Wala, Rajesh Raina as Seth, Nikhil Manhas and Simran Chouhan as Dancers.
The artistically  designed set having the unmistakable stamp of Jagpal, the visual artist, effective light design by Pankaj, live background score and songs by again well known musician Rakesh Anand and  Sheetal Dogra, makeup by Shammi Dhamir, the light and shadow effects-all contributed to the overall success of today’s production which was highly appreciated by audience which also included Prof Rita Jatinder, Raj Bharti, Makhan Lal Saraf, and Dr Sudhir Mahajan, Senior Drama Instructor and in-charge of the  State Theatre festival.
