Sub-zero temps, foggy weather in Kashmir; all flights cancelled

Winter vacations from today due to inclement weather

Srinagar, Dec 9: The foggy and intense cold weather conditions continued in Kashmir for fourth consecutive day today with temperatures across the region continuing to be subzero and no flights operating from Srinagar Airport since Saturday.
Fog engulfed Kashmir for the fourth consecutive day today. However, its intensity was lower than yesterday but not enough for flights to operate from Srinagar Airport.
The visibility at Srinagar Airport was below 600 metres forcing the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to cancel all the flights that were scheduled for today.
This is the fourth consecutive day that the flight operations were affected at Srinagar Airport. Since Saturday not a single flight landed or took off from Srinagar Airport and 11 flights were cancelled on Friday due to fog.
Hundreds of passengers had reached the airport and were waiting for the fog to clear but had to return to Srinagar as visibility didn’t improve at the airport. Majority of the passengers were given the next tickets for 16th of December as the fog is likely to continue till 10th of December and this will be followed by rains and snowfall.
The vehicles in Kashmir were plying at snail’s pace in the morning. Majority of the people preferred to stay indoors due to cold weather conditions. The vehicles had their lights on to avoid accidents.
The Weatherman has forecast foggy conditions to continue till 10th of December. They are caused due to dry and cold weather condition and absence of enough windy conditions to lift the fog up.
In the meantime, cold weather conditions prevailed in Kashmir today with minimum temperatures staying subzero.
Srinagar recorded maximum of 4.0 degree Celsius and minimum of minus 2.9 degree Celsius which was more than a degree from yesterday. Yesterday was the lowest temperature of the season at minus 4.0 degree Celsius.
Gulmarg, the world famous ski resort, recorded minimum of minus 4.2 degree Celsius. Pahalgam recorded maximum of 8.5 degree Celsius and minimum of minus 3.7 degree Celsius. Qazigund recorded maximum of 7.5 degree Celsius and minimum of minus 3.0 degree Celsius. Kokernag recorded maximum of 6.4 degree Celsius and minimum of minus 2.4 degree Celsius.
Jammu recorded maximum of 16.7 degree Celsius and minimum of 8.9 degree Celsius. Leh recorded maximum of 1.4 degree Celsius and minimum of minus 14.9 degree Celsius.
And in view of foggy conditions and forecast of further dip in temperature along with rains and snowfall over next week, Government today ordered winter vacation for all Government educational Institutions and recognized private schools up to Higher Secondary level functioning in the Kashmir division and winter zone areas of Jammu division from December 10 to February 22 next year.
