JAMMU, Feb 19: Suman Lata of Post Graduate (PG) Department, University of Jammu clinched gold in women’s long jump event in the 41st Inter-Collegiate Annual Athletic Meet 2014-15, organized by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu, which got underway at University Sports Stadium, here today.
Athletes from 29 Colleges of Jammu province affiliated with the University of Jammu participated in the event.
The silver medal in this event went to Ekta Rani of PG Department, while Lovely of GCW Gandhi Nagar claimed bronze.
Prof RD Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu was the chief guest on the Inaugural function who declared the meet open after unfurling the University Flag.
Addressing the athletes, Prof Sharma asked them to participate with commitment and dedication in this meet.
S M Sahai, ADGP (Armed) J&K Police presided over the function whereas Mukesh Singh, IGP (Armed), J&K Police was the  special guest on the occasion.
S M Sahai, while addressing the gathering and athletes said that J&K Police is committed to promote the sports in the State and if any athlete/s exhibit extra ordinary performance in the said Meet, he or she may also be recruited in the Police Department and avail all facilities including  quick promotions on the basis of performance.
Prof Dhian S Bhau, Director, Directorate of Sports & Physical Education, University of Jammu, presented welcome address, while the vote of thanks was presented by P D Singh.
The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Dr Jaspal Warwal.
Prominent among other guests who were present on the occasion were Prof Yudhvir Singh, Principal Govt. Degree College Ramban, Jai Kumar Sharma, Special Secretary to Vice-Chancellor, B K Magotra, H S Chib, Dr Vinod Bakshi, Kuldeep Magotra, H S Gill, Kuldeep Handoo, Sports Officer JKP, Mahesh Sharma, R C Thakur, Rakesh Puri, Balbir Singh Chib, Dr Pardeep Kumar, Naraiyani Jamwal, Suman Sharma, Romesh Sharma, Dr Brij Baloria, Ajaz Malik, Sudesh Bhagat, Dr Mandeep Singh, Sandeep Sharma, Vikram Jamwal, Gourav Sharma, Usha Chuni and Mukesh Sharma.
The events were conducted and managed by Vikesh Sharma, Goutam Sharma, Raj Kumar Bakshi, Ravish Vaid, Gagan Kumar, Vikas Karlopia, P D Singh students and staff of the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu under the technical expertise of Nirmal Singh, Harsimran Singh (Athletic Coaches), Chamail Singh, Gurbachan Singh and Narinder Sharma.
Earlier, in 800 mtrs men, Amit Sharma of SPMR College of Commerce bagged gold, while Jagdev Singh of PG Department University of Jammu won silver and Pankaj Choudhary of GDC, RS Pura claimed bronze.
In 800 mtrs women, Shiwani Sharma, Dharshana Singh and Shamim Bano of GDC Akhnoor, GCW Parade and GCW Udhampur claimed gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
In 1000 mtrs men, Amit Sharma of GDC Akhnoor, Davinder Sharma of GDC Paloura and Narinder of GDC Billawar clinched gold, silver and bronze medals respectively, while in shotput women, Tajinder Kour of MBS College, Pinky Kumari of GDC Udhampur and Jasvinder Kour of GCW Gandhi Nagar claimed gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
In shot put men, Mohd Asif of PG JU bagged gold, Muzzamil Hussain of MAM College, Jammu won silver and Rahul Saberwal of GGM Science College, Jammu claimed bronze medal, while in javelin women event, Alizabeth Mumtaz of PG Department, Pinky Kumari of GDC Udhampur and Sheetal Choudhary of GDC Samba claimed gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
The gold, silver and bronze medals in javelin men’s event went to Zakir of PG Department, JU, Naresh Mehra of GDC Paloura and Jinder Pal of Govt College of Education respectively.
The Meet is being officiated by Nirmal Kumar, Harsimran Singh, Chamail Singh, Gursharan Singh, Vikesh Kumar Sharma, Narinder Sharma, Goutam Sharma, Amit Sharma, Gagan Kumar, Vikas Karlopia, Vikram Jamwal, Manmohan Sharma, Priya Charak, Sangeeta Bhat, Manu Singh, Sachin Sharma, Reva Devi, Prableen Kour and Deepmala.
