SRINAGAR, July 10: People in Kupwara today alleged that the sumo drivers are charging them with hefty amounts as fare, causing inconvenience to travelers intending to travel from one place to another.
The travelers said that the sumo drivers are charging them with double fares which are in contrast to the Government order regarding an increase of only 30 percent in the existing fares.
“From Kupwara to Trehgam, we used to pay Rs 20, now; we are being charged Rs 30 to Rs 40 per passenger and that administration is not taking any note of the issues,” the locals said.
They further added that from Muqam-i-Shah Wali to Kupwara, they used to pay Rs 10 and they have to pay double. They also allege that there is no adherence to the SOPs.
Locals said that they know that the transporters have suffered huge losses, but even after that, they cannot overcharge and go against the rules.
On the other side, the authorities in Baramulla have got something else to say. They said that there has not been any order issued by the district authorities regarding the plying of sumos and those that are operating as of now are doing so illegally.
“Our district is a Red Zone and the district administration has not issued any order allowing the movement of sumos on the roads; only the SRTC buses are plying; we have also seized several vehicles plying on roads. People should avail the services of SRTC buses till the situation improves,” Assistant Regional Transport Officer Kupwara Jamshed Chowdhury told Excelsior.
