Take action against news channels trying to create hysteria about Kashmir: HC

SRINAGAR: Expressing displeasure over the media coverage of Kashmir situation, Jammu and Kashmir High Court (HC) directed the Government to take action against the news channels allegedly involved in creating hysteria about Kashmir and its people.

Telecast of news on local cables channels remained banned since 2010 though they are telecasting other programmes while two private cable channels are operating in winter capital, Jammu.

A division bench of the HC comprising Chief Justices N N Paul Vasanthakumar and Muzaffar Huasnain Attar has directed the Government to take action against national news channels who have created “hysteria” about Kashmir and its people.

The court gave the directions on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) alleging that some of the national news channels are had created hysteria about Kashmir. The bench expressed displeasure over the coverage by media channels and observed that the hysteria created by some national news channels has created problems for the Government.

However, the court said that since media is not above law the Government needs to take action against them. (AGENCIES)
