JAMMU, Apr 24: Tawi Trekkers J&K, the biggest trekking club of Jammu and Kashmir, released its calendar of activities for the year 2016-17, in an impressive function held at K L Saigal Hall, Abhinav Theatre, here today.
Prof. Lalit Magotra, an eminent scientist and a writer and a Founder member of Tawi Trekkers J&K who was the chief guest on the occasion, who released the Calendar in presence of guest of honour, Shiv Kumar Sharma, Joint Secretary; Special Guest Haji Abdul Qayoom, Chief Sports Officer; Special Guest Rajann Sharma, Divisional Sports Officer of J&K State Sports Council and Special Guest Sh. Rameshwar Mengi, Principal of Shiksha Niketan Group Of Schools, Jammu.
Highlighting the activities to be undertaken by the club this year General Secretary of the club Shawetica Khajuria mentioned that the calendar included three Himalayan Trekking Programmes one at the beautiful Moungri area of Udhampur for 500 children, Dharamshala and Manali Himalayan Programmes in Himachal Pradesh for about 200 school children each during summer vacations, two trekking expeditions in Dhauladhar Range in Himachal Pradesh for Junior and Senior members besides regular short treks/visits to heritage sites and Wild Life parks in Jammu region.
To spot the talent in sport climbing at the grass root level and to groom it for future competitions the club has an ambitious plan of conducting regular coaching cum practice camps in co-ordination with Mountaineering Association of J&K at Sprawling Buds School, Jammu. Those excelling in such camps shall also be deputed for coaching and practice at international standard climbing walls at Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi.
A state level sport climbing competition shall also be conducted by Tawi Trekkers at Sprawling Buds School in the month of May, 2016.
The major attraction of the year would, however, be participation of club’s mountaineers in a mountaineering expedition to Matho Kangri peak in Ladakh Himalaya in August, 2016. The prestigious expedition shall be organized by Mountaineering Association of J&K and sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
While releasing the calendar Prof. Lalit Magotra, who has been associated with Tawi Trekkers J&K since its formation in 1982 and is now the Advisor of the club hoped that with concerted efforts of the club and Mountaineering Association of J&K and generous sponsorship of various activities by the J&K State Sports Council, the state would again become a formidable force in sport climbing and mountaineering at the national level.
Principal of Shiksha Niketan Senior Secondary School, Jeevan Nagar, Jammu Rameshwar Mengi; Administrator of Oriental Academy Hr. Sec School Sh. Vivek Chauhan ; Director of Sprawling Buds School Ramesh Khajuria and Principal of Shastri Memorial Hr. Sec. School Ravinder Gupta, were the prominent persons present on the occasion assured their help and full cooperation to the club for the smooth conduct of its various activities.
