DATIA, MP : Death toll in yesterday’s stampede over the Sindh river near Ratangarh Devi temple, 55 km from this district headquarters, went up to 111 today, official sources said.
Most of the deceased were women and children. As many as 80 injured were being treated in hospitals in Gwalior, Datia and Sewda. The causality figure was 91 till late in the evening.
Some more bodies were found at Ratangarh in the evening while others succumbed to their injuries in hospitals.
According to officials, the stampede took place in yesterday morning after rumour spread that the bridge was damaged as a tractor-trolley hit it. After which, police resorted to mild lathicharge to control the mob.
On the other hand, eyewitnesses said the stampede occurred after the police lathicharge. Devotees fled helter-skelter after the incident while some also jumped off the bridge.
Director General of Police Nandan Dubey, Chief Secretary Antony Disa and Additional Director General of Police Sarabjit Singh rushed from Bhopal and took stock of the situation, the sources added.
