Sir,
This has reference to the writeup’Doctor-Patient relationship'(DE,July1,2015).It is interesting to read that National Doctor’s Day is celebrated in India on July1,2015 in honour of the famous physcian B.C.Roy who was conferred Bharat Ratna on 4th of February 1961 in recognition of his exceptional services ss a doctor.A Doctor has been held in high esteem in India since times immemorial and we have had doctors such as Charaka, Sushruta and many others who have made valuable contribution to the medical field. The doctor holds such a high position that he is considered next to God in our country .So, the heathy and cordial doctor- patient relationship is central to the heathcare. It is the patient who reposes full confidence and trust on the doctor’s capability and confides everything in the doctor to get him treated. The doctor, on the other hand, puts in sincere efforts to save the life of their patients. In some cases of highly infectious diseases, the doctors treat their patients at a great risk of their own life.
But of late, there have been instances where some unscruplous doctors have misused their knowledge and expertise and resorted to foul practices like performing sex determination tests ,conducting illegal abortions, indulging themselves in illegal trade of vital organs such as kidneys, sexual abuse of their patients etc and thus, maligned their profession. But such doctors are in miniscule minority and by and large, doctors perform their duties conscientiously and selflessly. There have also been unfortunate incidents when attendents of patients have entered into scuffle with the doctors and resorted to extreme step of holding them responsible for the death of their dearones and manhanding them. Such unfortunate incidents should be avoided.
A doctor’s profession issued a noble profession and doctors should keep the high professional ethics in mind that in serving their patients they are serving humanity and God as ‘service of humanity is service of God’,they say.People,on the other hand, should realise that doctors are also human beings equipped with medical knowledge and expertise and there are times when saving the life of their patients is beyond their ability and control. Thus, there ought to exist a relationship of mutual trust and humanity beteeen them.Such days need to be celebrated and highlighted through media to give the readers a glimpse of the singular countribution of those great men/ women in whose honour these days are celebrated.
Yours etc…
