Three held for smuggling gold worth Rs 1 crore at airport

NEW DELHI, Feb 17:

Three persons have been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold bars valued at about Rs one crore at the airport here.

The accused were intercepted by customs officials after their arrival from Sharjah here yesterday. On detailed examination of their baggage, gold bars weighing 3.932 kg was recovered, a customs official said.

The value of the recovered gold is Rs one crore, he said.

The trio were arrested and the gold was seized, the official added.

Last week, customs officials had arrested four persons for allegedly trying to smuggle in gold worth about Rs 1.4 crore at the airport.

Of the four arrested, three had arrived here from Dubai while one from Afghanistan. They were intercepted by the customs officials soon after their arrival. On detailed examination of their baggage, gold bars, wires, stripes and plates weighing 5.5 kg were recovered, the officials said.

The recovered gold was seized and passengers were arrested, the official said, adding the total value of the yellow metal is around Rs 1.4 crore. (PTI)
