The issue of sports raised by veteran actor and social reformer,Amir Khan through his popular show’ Satyamev Jayate’season 3 and the overwhelming response received throgh tweets, miss calls, emails demonstrates that the enlightened people of this country want sports to be accorded a prominent place in the school and university curricula and that sports can change the life of a person as happened in case of Akhilesh,an addict turned sportsperson. The Government needs to give more attention to games and sports and provide playing facilities at village, block, tehsil,district,State and national level.Games and sports also need to be given a place of importance in schools to ensure the physical fitness of students.Going by the size and population of India,our performance at International events such as Olympic games, Commonwealth games,Asian Games etc has not been satisfactory whereas some smaller countries fare much better than us.
For example, India finished 8th in the medals tally in the recently concluded Asian.This can be attributed to lack of facilities for the players and apathy of the Government and sports bodies towards games.It is high time that the suggestion that Sports bodies and Federations were controlled by sports persons rather than politicians should be given a serious thought and widely debated.
