Over 10 buses have so far been scrapped at Parimpora Bus Stand in Srinagar by their owners who have not been able to take their buses on the road for the last several months now to earn their livelihood.
“I had no option but to scrap the bus and sell its parts and other related items to make my ends meet,” said Bilal Ahmad Bhat who was scrapping his 2003 model bus.
The transporters said that they are facing tough times since 2014 when Kashmir was inundated. “Since then, we have not been able to grow; few years after that came 2019 and since then the situation has been the worst,” the transporters said.
Bashir Ahmad, a driver said that the Government is only announcing measures for the betterment of people, but on the ground, they are not able to see anything happening.
“While we are not able to earn anything, how are we going to pay back the loans, pay the toll tax, insurance and other things,” he asked, adding that they are facing the worst situation which is consuming them.
Shabir Ahmad, Chairman Transport Welfare Association also said that the condition of people associated with the sector is bad and that the Government needs to take note of their apathy.
“Those who are associated with it are not earning anything; their families are starving and we fail to see concrete steps from the LG’s administration,” he said.
He said that even the buses of 2007 models have been scrapped which he said is worrying. “There is a need for the Government to take measures for the betterment of the transporters,” he said.
