Budapest, Aug 26:
Reigning champion Nitu (48kg) and Asian bronze-medallist Bhavesh Kattimani (52kg) advanced to the semifinals, assuring India of at least two medals in the world youth boxing championships here today.
Bhavesh notched up a close 3-2 win over Badr Berhili of Morocco, while Nitu dominated her bout with such ferocity that the referee awarded it to her in the first round itself against Germany’s Maxi Klotzer.
Earlier, three other Indian women boxers advanced to the quarterfinals with comprehensive wins here.
Sakshi (57kg), Jony (60kg) and Anamika (51kg) entered the last-eight stage after fetching dominating victories.
Sakshi defeated Hungary’s Viktoria Matesz, while Jony got the the better of New Zealand’s Pelea Fruean — both being unanimous victories. Anamika, on the other hand, out-classed her Taipei’s Ting-Fang Ling in her pre-quarterfinal bout.
“We came here a week before the championships thanks to the planning done by the national federation. All the sparring time that we got has got us the results today. It’s a very good performance,” India coach Bhaskar Bhatt tod PTI.
However, Lalita went out of the tournament after being out-punched by Germany’s Alina Popp.
There was disappointment in the men’s draw as well with S Barun Singh losing to Thailand’s Thitisan Panmod. (PTI)
