Srinagar : Two militants have been killed in an ongoing encounter in the frontier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir, a defence ministry spokesperson said. Col N N Joshi said UNI that on a specific information about the presence of militants, troops launched a search operation at Bhat Mohalla, Handwara, in the frontier district of Kupwara late last night. However, when the area was being sealed, militants opened indiscriminate fire with automatic weapons. Troops also retaliated and in the fierce encounter, two militants have been killed so far, Col Joshi said, adding that the operation was going on when the reports last came in. Additional security forces have been rushed to the area and cordon was further tightened, he said. However, it was not immediately clear how many militants are hiding there. The entire area received heavy snowfall during the past two days. (Agencies)
