JAMMU, Oct 15: District Udhampur players’ displayed real class and skill to dominate the day-1 of the 3-day Divisional Level Inter-District Handball Championship, which got underway at Police Lines Handball ground, here today.
The Championship in which over 300 boys and girls drawn from various districts of Jammu Division are taking part, is being organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports in both boys and girls sections under the age groups of 14, 17 and 19 years.
The tournament was declared open by Ashok Kumar, Deputy Director Youth Services and Sports, Jammu in a well attended function, which among others was attended by Vivek Khajuria, former Indian handball player and J&K Police Handball coach, besides Jeet Singh, Zonal Physical Education Officer and Convener Technical Committee.
Speaking on the occasion, Ashok Kumar advised the players to participate in the games and sports with a killer instinct to win medals and not merely for the sake of participation and achieving certificates.
Earlier, in Under-17 boys, Udhampur thrashed Rajouri by a margin of 8 goals (14-06) in an easy contest. Ayush scored maximum 4 goals for Udhampur, while Abhey and Maanash netted 3 goals each. Rahul and Naman also contributed their bit to the teams cause. For Rajouri, Pinkey scored both the goals.
Udhampur District also shined in Under-19 boys event, defeating Doda by 7 goals (16-09) in an exciting contest. Amit Singh, Naman and Akhil Sharma were the star performers for Udhampur who netted 5, 4 and 3 goals respectively. Sachin and Nitin also played well for Udhampur, while Vikramjeet, Hawroon, Tauseef, Umar and Vicky scored goals for Doda.
The Udhampur District teams have been prepared by Ravi Singh, Vipin Potra, Rishi Sharma and Karan Magotra.
Earlier, in Under-14 girls, Jammu defeated Doda by (4-3) in a close contest. Reea Sagar scored 3 goals for Jammu, while Roohad Malik, Komal and Shallu scored the goals for Doda, while in Under-14 boys, Jammu trounced Udhampur by (5-3) in a close contest. For Jammu, Vansh, Rahat and Rajan were the goal scorers, while Soujanya netted all the three goals for Udhampur.
Meanwhile, in Under-17 girls, Poonch blanked Doda by six goals to nil (6-0) in a one-sided affair, in which Kajal senior and Kajal junior scored 3 and 2 goals each. Sonia also netted one goal for the winners, while in Under-19 girls, Udhampur trounced Doda by two goals to nil (2-0) to advance in the tournament.
