Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurates Squash World Cup

Chennai, June 12: Tamil Nadu Youth Welfare and Sports Development Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday evening inaugurated the World Squash championship.

The event was inaugurated in the presence of Atulya Misra,  Additional Chief Secretary, Zena Wooldridge, President  World Squash Federation, Mr N.Ramachandran, Chairman  Championship Committee and Anil Wadhwa, President,  Squash Rackets Federation of India.

In a grand ceremony held at the Central Atrium of the  Express Avenue mall, the audience were greeted by a  grand spectacle of music and dance.

Shyam Ravishankar a 26-year-old genre-bending professional  violinist & vocalist enthralled the audiences. With a wide  repertoire of both popular & creative music, Shyam has  performed over 1500 shows across over 10 countries. He  was accompanied by Surya a professional Keyboard specialist.

This was followed by Thudumbattam a traditional folk performing  art, mostly performed in the regions of Coimbatore and Erode  districts of Tamil Nadu.

The 4th edition of the Squash World Cup, will begin from tomorrow.

It will feature eight countries ? Australia, Colombia, Egypt, Hong  Kong, Japan, Malaysia, South Africa and India.

The Squash World Cup has a rich history dating back to its inaugural  edition in 1996 in Malaysia. Australia emerged victorious in the first  tournament, followed by England and Egypt in subsequent editions.

The revival of the event in 2023 promises to continue the tradition of  showcasing top-level squash and fostering global camaraderie.

This year’s tournament will feature gender parity within teams,  showcasing the commitment to inclusivity and equality in squash.

For the first time in WSF history, matches will be played to a best  of 5 games to seven points, adding an exciting twist to the competition.

Each team will consist of two men and two women, competing against  each other in ties of four matches within their respective pools. UNI
