SRINAGAR, Sept 30: Umar Nabi claimed gold in Category III Senior Men of the Chinar Corps Cycling Competition, organized by 126 Inf Bn (TA) JAK RIF in collaboration with the Department of Youth Services and Sports and Cycling Association of Kashmir Division, under the aegis of HQ 31 Sub Area at Dal Gate, here today.
Mohd Akbar and Ghulam Rasool bagged second and third place in this event respectively.
500 students drawn from various Schools / Institutions of Srinagar and Budgam District participated in the event. The cyclists were flagged off from Haback Chowk Ganderbal in the wee hours and after covering a distance of 13 km, the race culminated at Nehru Park Srinagar.
The event was organized for the Category I (Sub Junior boys under 14 yrs), Category II (Junior boys 15 to 19 yrs) and Category III (Senior (Men) 19 years and above.
Jaipal Singh, Director Youth Services and Sports J&K was the chief guest on the prize distribution function, who along with Syed Ashiq Hussain Bukhari, SSP Srinagar felicitated the winners of three categories and encouraged them to take part in more such sports activities to make full use of the opportunities to showcase their talent at National/International level in times to come.
All the participants lauded the initiative of the Army and expressed their desire for conduct of more such sports activities in the future also. Colonel SS Pathania, SC, Commanding Officer, 126 Inf Bn (TA) JAK RIF was also present on the occasion. The winners in the following categories were awarded trophies and cash prizes.
In Category II Junior boys 15 to 19 years, Ashan Majeed Khan, Amir Ashad and Owais Hussain claimed first three positions respectively, while in Category 1 Sub Junior Boys
Under-14 years, Rashid, Yawar and Amir Ahmed bagged the first three positions.
A cash prize of Rs 10000, 7000 and 3000 was awarded to positioners in Category III respectively, Rs 8000, 5000 and 2000 to positioners of Category II and Rs 5000, 3000 and 2000 to the winners of first three places in Category I.
