KARGIL, Jan 14: In a setback for the thriving Ice Hockey community in Kargil, the Department of Youth Services & Sports faces an unexpected challenge as warm weather disrupts traditional ice rink preparation. For 14 years, the department has championed Ice Hockey, making it a cherished sport in Ladakh. However, this year, dreams of aspiring players are at risk due to a lack of conducive conditions for forming natural ice.
Despite proactive efforts by the YSS Department, organizing tournaments and coaching camps, the warm weather prevailing in mid-January hampers the formation of the essential ice surface. To combat this challenge, innovative solutions are being explored, such as the use of electric fans during the night to encourage the freezing process.
The YSS Department is steadfast in its dedication to developing young talent. But the unforeseen climate challenge raises the need for long-term fixes. The community unites behind these initiatives, highlighting the necessity of a completed practice ring at Biamathang Kargil and an all-weather ice hockey rink, which is currently under construction at Kurbathang Kargil.
The impact of climate changes on traditional games in the region underscores the urgency for long-term solutions. As Kargil faces this unprecedented challenge, hopes are high that creative measures will prevail, allowing the youth to continue pursuing their dreams on the ice.
