JAMMU, Mar 17: Arun Sharma Sports and Social Welfare Trust organized a UT Level Open Weightlifting Competition at the Indoor Complex, Bhagwati Nagar, to honour late Arun Kumar Sharma, former Divisional Sports Officer (DSO) of J&K Sports Council.
The competition was inaugurated by Dr. Dawood Iqbal Baba, Director of Sports at the University of Jammu, while the closing ceremony was attended by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Rajeshwar Singh, who was the chief guest. Along with other distinguished guests, DIG Rajeshwar Singh presented medals and prizes to the winners. Among the attendees were Chief Education Officer (CEO) Jammu, JK Padha, DySP Headquarters Farah Nishat, DySP Daljit Singh, Inspector Arti Thakur, SHO Women Cell, General Secretary of J&K Weightlifting Association Yudhvir Singh, retired DSO of JKSC Ravi Singh, weightlifting coaches Dr. Dhanraj Singh Slathia and Akash Virdhy, Inderpal Singh and retired sports officer (DYSS) Rajesh Chander Vaid.
The competition saw fierce competition in multiple weight categories. Women’s category, winners included: 45 kg: Akshara Kumari (1st), Ichcha Sodhi (2nd), Manvi (3rd), 49 kg: Sameksha Dubey (1st), Anuradha (2nd), Avni Angotra (3rd), 55 kg: Riya Mehra (1st), Heena Sanjwal (2nd) and Niharika Chandal (3rd)
In the Men’s category, notable winners were: 55 kg: Tanesh Koushal (1st), Mahesh Kumar (2nd), Rohit Sharma (3rd). 61 kg: Vasu Sharma (1st), Anil Kumar (2nd), Karanjot Singh (3rd). 67 kg: Krish Saini (1st), Sourab Sharma (2nd), Bhupinder Singh (3rd). The event highlighted the hard work and dedication of all participants while continuing to promote weightlifting in the region.
