JAMMU, July 28: Central University of Jammu (CUJ) has inaugurated the “Wall of Heroes”, which displays photos of Param Veer Chakra recipients, as part of the HRD Ministry’s ‘Vidya Veerta Abhiyan’.
The event was organized by the National Service Scheme (NSS) of CUJ in collaboration with the 26 Infantry division, Jammu.
The wall, which is titled as “Our Heroes”, was unveiled by Prof Ashok Aima, Vice Chancellor of CUJ and Maj Gen S K Sharma, YSM GoC of 26 Infantry Division at a function held in the campus to commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas.
In his presidential address, Prof Ashok Aima emphasized the valour and sacrifices of soldiers during war and how it is important for students to realise its value. He said, CUJ would constantly interact with Indian Army and security forces for exchange of knowledge and values. He also directed the National Service Scheme (NSS) to chart out a programme where CUJ can constructively engage with the War veterans and Veernaris. He mentioned that Veernaris can join some of the vocation programmes such as Beauty and Wellness programme conducted by the university.
While delivering the key note address, Maj  Gen  S K  Sharma  highlighted that war is not just the business of Army or other services, it is the collective effort of a nation to defend its core values and interests. Soldiers need moral support from the civilians, he added.
More than fifteen war veterans from various units who fought in Tiger Hills and Tololing and five Veernaris were felicitated by the Vice Chancellor and the GoC  Brig  (Retd.) Harcharan Singh, Director of Sainik Welfare Department.
The event ended with a detailed presentation on battles of Kargil War by Brig  Atul Kumar, CO of Artillery Brigade and followed by interactions with the students.
Earlier, Prof  N K  Tripathi, Proctor of CUJ,  delivered the formal welcome address.
