JAMMU, Dec 5: Village Defence Committee (VDC) members today staged protest demonstration at Exhibition Ground here today.
They were demanding honorarium and other financial benefits at par with the SPOs. A large number of VDC members from Doda, Udhampur, Rajouri, Reasi and other parts assembled at Exhibition Ground near Press Club here in the morning and staged protest demonstration. They alleged that despite clear norms, they are not being paid any financial assistance for their services by Home department.
The protesting VDC members alleged that after major massacres by militants at Prankote, Chapnari, Dessa, Chill and other areas, the Govt framed VDCs. They were provided guns and were deputed with three SPOs to guard villages. A package was provided to the team and three SPOs were asked to share the same. But for the last many years, no SPO is sharing the amount and VDC members have been left high and dry.
Despite the matter being projected before the District SPs and concerned SHOs, the issue was not resolved. They have been rendering their services but are not being provided any monetary benefit. They urged upon the Lt Governor to resolve the issue and provide them special incentives/ honorarium at par with SPOs.
