Vipul lifts men’s singles title; Saini duo bags doubles trophy

JAMMU, Sept 12: Defeating Vikram Saini in the summit clash, ace shuttler Vipul Saini bagged the title trophy in men’s singles event, while the duo of Vipul and Vikram got better of the pair of Sahil Verma and Shantul Raina in the men’s doubles final of the ongoing 28th Jammu District Badminton Championship, which concluded at Indoor Complex, MA Stadium, here today.
Devender Singh Rana, Provincial President National Conference was the chief guest on the valedictory function, who distributed prizes among the winners and runners-up shuttlers of various events on the occasion, while ADGP Dilbag Singh, president Jammu City and District Badminton Association and Industrialist Parveen Mittal were the guests of honour. Dr OD Sharma, general secretary J&K Badminton Association and Tony were also present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rana, while advocating for upgrading badminton infrastructure in the State, said that two to three badminton halls will be established at an earliest, adding that the Indoor Complex Badminton Hall will be made available for practice purpose on Saturdays and Sundays also.
Appreciating Omar Abdullah led Government for developing sports infrastructure in the State, Rana said that the State Government was committed to promote sports and games in nooks and corners of the State.
ADGP Dilbag Singh also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, in the men’s singles final, talented Vipul defeated strong rival Vikram in a tough contest by (21-18, 21-16), while in men’s doubles title clash, the pair of Vipul and Vikram got better of the duo of Sahil and Shantul in straight sets by (21-14, 21-16) to win the title.
Meanwhile, in the finals of other events, Divum Gupta trounced Divyam Lengeh by (21-9, 21-16) to claim Under-17 boys singles title, while in Veteran singles event, Daljeet Singh defeated Anil Gurkha in the summit clash by (21-17, 21-20) to claim the title.
In veteran doubles, Raju Chawla and Pradeep got better of Anil and Sunil Gurkha in the finals by (22-20, 21-16).
In the women’s singles final played yesterday evening, Sulakhni prevailed over Akanksha by (21-12, 21-14) to lift the title.
