Waste not want not

Ajit Singh Nagra
Waste not want not should be the motto of our practical daily life and a norm of social existence to conserve our natural  resources and preserve our material wealth from total wastage due to our unmerciful handling and indiscriminate selection. We can do little by little through our judicious steps as single drops of water make big ocean. We blindly ape the western people without imbibing the good points of their culture. They invite the people with cards and mention RSVP a French word respondez sail vous plaite (reply if you please) the number of the participants to be entertained and wastage is minimized but in our society we invite every. Tom Dick and Harry to collect money and the cooked food goes waste and the same is thrown in the streets for the animals to feast while our human beings have to remain hungry. Our little rationality in this direction can save enough food to feed our starved population. The mere show of functions leads to all wastage.
Every year we celebrate Dussahara throughout the nook and corner of the country and effigies of Ravan his brother Kumbhakaran and his son Meghnath are made of bamboo and large quantity of this paper making material is reduced to ashes to provide solace to our religious sentiments. We need to follow the example of lord Rama’s noble life and take a leaf out of the life of our legendary heroes but we deforest the bamboos which can be used for making  papers and books or other writing material. There is a need to put a legal restrictions on burning bamboos on these occasions to save something for our posterity.
The indiscriminate cutting of trees has ravaged the fertility of the soil and has made it prone to natural clamities like floods landsliding and undesirable headaches. The cutting of trees has changed the climate of the place and land has become dry for cultivation.
The greedy people get political protection and patronage to fell trees and it has compounded our troubles. The land is clear of vegetaion for urbanization and this deforestation  will result in frequent occurrences of natural climates like earth quakes, land sliding and famine we need to deal sternly with the defaulters to save our planet form complete rination and ravage.
We waste money lavishly in celebrating our festivals. No doubt Depawali is our most important festival but crackers worth crores of rupees are burnt to ashes without purpose. It  not only  the wastage of money and energy but the atmosphere also gets dreadfully vicious due to smoke and it causes many problems noise pollution as well as air pollution. The  decoration lights go on illuminating the building and shops throughout  the year while there is a shortage of power in the hospitals. The best way to celebrate the festival is to illuminate our houses and streets with earthen oil lamps as our forefathers used to do in their times to avoid noise and air pollution as well as other fatal incidents like fire out breaks in the localities and cattle sheds. With the pasage of time many ills and evils have crept in our festival celebrations and the real sanctity of the days is ignored. Our commercial approach and greed for money have made us inhospitable and close fisted in social kinship.
Some sections of the society render yeoman service in the progress and prosperity of the nation but their role is neglected and their labour and gullible nature is exploited. The farmers produce food, fruit, vegetables, poultry and milk products but it shameful that this peasant is forced to commit suicide due to financial constraints. The army makers supreme sacrifices to defend our borders and provide normalcy and security to the country but these soldiers are presurized to end their lives with their service weapons due to our rough treatment. The drivers of the buses, trucks and trains and pilots of planes run day and night restlessly to carry people and goods safely from one corner to another but our attitude towards them is not altruistic. The sweeprs render menial services to provide saniation and cleanliness but we despite them and make them  touch me not and seem  not out of apprehension. It is very sad that the working classes provide us all comforts but we exploit them and suck their blood. The real wastage is observed in transport where liquid gold viz, namely petrol and diesel is wasted due to our craze for big vehicles and techno mania it is strange that every member in a well off family owns a separate vehicle but he finds no space to park them and keeps the roads and streets occupied and crowded with his piece of decoration. We look forward to the day when good sense shall previl upon us to minimize this wastage so that something is left for our posterity to survive otherwise they would curse us for our extreme selfishness and shortsightedness.
Modernization, urbanization and industrialization have compounded our problems land is squeezing and we have pumped the gutters into the rivers and canals and the indespecible water is polluted and it is has posed a threat to our existence.
The working classes lab our hard day and night for the comforts for others always languish in abject poverty getting only a few mar cells to eat, a few rags to clad in sweltering heat and biting cold to bivouac in the open while the birth less and cunning people batten on the sweat and tears of these people, live in air conditioned palatial houses indulge in all kinds of white collar crimes, scams and scandals, snooze and snore all the time in the cozy and velvet seats, consume public exchequer at their sweet will and ultimately die of diabetes caused by indigestion and none is there to  bridge the yawing gulf between the producers and parasites com predators to insure a better society.
The problems can be solved provided we change our attitude but our system of education is based on bookish knowledge and parroting few questions, so education has failed to serve our purpose in the right sprit. It is the duty of all to check this wastage otherwise this population explosion would hastily bring our dooms day. When India became independent our total population was 36 crores and large bulk of this population lived in rural areas thriving on out molded agriculture and the country was self sufficient in food stuffs and milk products. People lived in communion with nature and were hale and hearty but now the picture has badly changed and our population has swelled rapidly due to social taboos and ignornace, some sections of the society are proud of producing a littler  of children who roam in the streets ill clad ill fed barefooted and disease ridden while the educated sections are aware of the merits of family planning and keep their number under control. In order to stem the tide of all wastage, we need to change our attitude and adopt a planned  system and rational approach in life otherwise we should feel ourselves insecure as if we had been sitting on the dormant volcano that can erupt any time.
