JAMMU, June 5: During a webinar organized here today by SAMIKSHA-Society for Promotion of Inclusive and Sustainable Development, Vice Chancellor SKUAST Jammu, Prof. Rakesh Kumar Gupta delivered expert lecture on the topic of ‘Biodiversity – A key to Human Survival’.
The webinar was organized to mark World Environment Day under the theme Celebrating Biodiversity.
The Vice Chancellor while referring to India as a globally recognized mega-biodiversity country with 2.2 per cent of world’s land area, 12 per cent of world’s biota, 13 per cent of the country’s landmass in Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) and about 50 per cent of the known Indian species in IHR said, the Union Territories of Ladakh and J&K represent the major portion of IHR.
He also said that biodiversity was facing major threats from land upheavals, glaciations, forest fires and denudations, genetic depletion, protracted periods of droughts and floods in many areas and the rapid speed of urbanization.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, Ajay Khajuria referred to the role biodiversity as insurance for human survival by way of genetic pool for food, water, nutrition, health security, medicine, clothing and many of daily requirements.
The programme was conducted by Malvika Khajuria, Founder Member of Samiksha. Vote of thanks was presented by C.M Sharma, Secretary, Samiksha.
