West Bengal’s Sonkalan Bharti emerges clear leader after six rounds; J&K players Meenal & Soham maintain supremacy over rivals

JAMMU, Sept 4: Sonkalan Bharti from West Bengal emerged clear leader after six rounds in the ongoing South Asian Amateur Chess Championship, being organized by All J&K Chess Association and sponsored by J&K State Sports Council at Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust, Channi Himmat, here today.
Among Asian players from Nepal and Bangladesh no one could manage lead. Among J&K players, best performances from Meenal Gupta and Soham Kamotra as both were at 4.5 points.
Around 430 players from 28 states, 200 coaches, managers and officials are participating in the event. The players from Nepal and Bangladesh are also participating in this event. 45 players from J&K are participating in this event. Cash prizes worth Rs 10 lakh will be distributed among the winners’ alongwith trophies and medals. A total of 9 round under Swiss system will be played in this first ever mega international event in J&K.
Fourteen professional Arbiters are working for smooth conduct of this event, while Srivatsan R has been appointed by Asian Chess Federation as Chief Arbiter.
Rakesh Gupta, Chartered Accountant was special guest in today’s round. Atul Kumar Gupta, President AJKCA and Joint secretary All India chess Federation, Ashiq Ahmad Kolu, General Secretary, Baldev Raj and Taranvir Singh Gujral, Vice Presidents, Khalid Amin, Treasurer, Kuljeet Jamwal, Press Secretary, Vikas Nanda, Coordinator, Raj Kumar and Rakesh Gupta.
