Kargil, Feb 24: Army organized winter sports activities including Ice Hockey and Archery under ‘Sadhbhavna’ at Bimbat in Drass in collaboration with the civil administration, here today.
12 men and three women Ice Hockey teams participated in the championship along with 10 Archery teams with 100 Archers from the villages of Drass.
The matches are going on daily from 22nd of February and the local population is coming to witness the matches in huge numbers, despite the extreme cold temperature.
Conveying their gratitude through their enthusiasm, one spectator from Goshan Gulzar Ahmad said that the event is like a winter fest for the people which are exciting the local youth to play for a goal.
Mohammad Amin Polo, one of the sports promoters of Ladakh, said that it is the Army which is always helping the youth to participate in the games like Ice Hockey, Horse Polo and Archery and still Drass has two months for winter activities and the snow games will continue after these events.
Amin Polo urged upon the Government to establish a world class winter sports centre and a high altitude training centre at Drass which will be used to train our Olympic players by providing them conditions and atmosphere like that of Europe and America.
