KATHUA, Oct 13: The women Sarpanches of Panchayat Kathera showed dissatisfaction over the delay in legal action of Kathua police on assailants who abused and tried to thrash a female Sarpanch during the Back to village programme.
A deputation of Sarpanches led by Sarpanch, Bholi Singh met with Deputy Commissioner, Kathua OP Bhagat today and apprised him about the incident which has taken place in Panchayat Kathera on the day of Back to Village, when a Gram Sabha was arranged and in the presence officers some villagers abused a Woman Sarpanch and tried to assault her.
Woman Sarpanch, Meenakshi Rajput alleged that the rival group of Panchayat including Jagdish Singh, Rattan Singh and Parbat Singh insulted her and tried to assault her and she was rescued by visiting officers and villagers who intervened.
She added that when she was on the way to her home she was also stopped in the way by alleged assailants and warned her to resign from post of Sarpanch, otherwise she will face consequences. She said that the matter was brought into the notice of SSP Kathua by her.
She said Kathua police arranged police security for her but despite the passing of four days no legal action was taken against the accused so far by the police as the accused are moving freely and she faced threat to her life . Sarpanch Meenakshi Rajput said that the women Sarpanches are not safe when culprits are moving freely and could damage her. She has raised question over the delay in police action when the matter is concerned to a woman who is the reputed dignitary and an elected Sarpanch.
The Deputy Commissioner, Kathua, OP Bhagat assured an inquiry into the matter for further legal action.
