Workshop on ‘Political representation of women in J&K’ organized at JU

JAMMU, Aug 10: The Department of Lifelong Learning (DLL), University of Jammu, today organized a workshop on the theme “Political representation of women in J&K” in collaboration with Women’s Collective of Jammu and Kashmir.
Participants were from different fields of interest like some female representatives from social work, Political party leaders and eminent professors were present, who all narrated their perceptions and experience.
The introductory part of the workshop was started by Prof Kavita Suri, Director, DLL, who highlighted the key issues about the participation of women in politics and emphasized on the overall related issues.
Prof Abha Chauhan from Department of Sociology highlighted some interesting points about the participation of women in politics. She also highlighted the problems women face in entering politics and how these challenges can be faced.
Dr Shaveta Sharma from Department of Sociology talked about women representation in Panchayati Raj institutions. She narrated the success stories of panches and Sarpanches in Jammu district and emphasized on the need for reservation of seats for women in Panchayati Adalat. Bhatti from Political Science Department talked about the obstacles women experience within political parties and institutions.
Namrata Sharma, an Ex corporator, discussed the difficulties she faced while contesting elections, but she acted with great zeal while during her work. She also emphasized the fact that 33 percent of reservation of women is only at the Panchayat/Municipal level, but negligible at the parliamentary and State levels.
Suresh Jamwal, who remained BJP Mahila Morcha president in 1992 stressed the fact that India is a patriarchal society, though she worked very hard she did not get the appropriate position in her party.
Sureshta Jamwal, a social worker and a representative of BJP Mahila Mandal, shared her views about her work in the corporate sector by mentioning her extensive experience.
Sunnite Sharma, Panch from Gole Gujral, Jammu, said that there is discrimination in society and need of the hour to strengthen women’s position in every aspect in society.
Prof. Rita Jitendera, as chief guest of this workshop, emphasized on the role of women in the society and stressed that “one should die with shoes on” furthermore, she shared her experiences of her life struggle. She was of the view that one should appreciate the role of every women and women must support each other and also themselves.
