Srinagar, Sept 12: A workshop on Young Diabetes Registry (YDR), a National Task Force Project by ICMR, was organized by Department of Endocrinology Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) which has been selected as one of the collaborating centers for the project.
A spokesperson of SKIMS said that Dr Shariq Masoodi, Program Coordinator and Principal investigator YDR, highlighted the objectives of the project, focused to understand the magnitude of the problem, disease pattern/types, geopgraphic variations, incidence and prevalence rates of complications.
Dr Masoodi, while giving an overview of diabetes said it is a global epidemic and more than 3 million deaths occur every year with one death occurring in every 7 seconds, the spokesperson said. “In past many years Kashmir has witnessed high occurrence of diabetes with more and more cases of people with young onset of age being diagnosed,” the spokesperson quoting Dr Masoodi said.
Director SKIMS Dr.Showkat Ali Zargar complimented Dr Shariq Masoodi for the initiative and hoped it will go a long way to know the exact population of young diabetic patients, less than 25 year age, who mostly come from poor socio-economic background. He said the data will help the policy makers in formulating program focused on free delivery insulin and other support to these needy young patients.

“During workshop various presentations were given by Post-doctoral scholars of Endocrinology Departments on diabetes management & insulin treatment followed by discussion. The session was chaired by HOD, Medicine Dr Parvaiz Koul and Assistant Professor Endocrinol-ogy, Dr Riyaz Misgar.
