JAMMU, June 3: Different educational institutions and social organisations celebrated ‘World Bicycle Day’ enthusiastically across the Union Territory by organising cycle rallies.
Nehru Yuva Kendra in collaboration with Vir Partap Singh Guidance and Counselling Cell Gurha Slathia organised a cycle rally from War Memorial Gurha Slathia which was flagged off by Member Parliament Jugal Kishore Sharma by passing through various areas including Brig. Rajinder Park Bagoona and finally culminated at War Memorial with a motive to spread the message to protect the environment and promote fitness among the youth.
The Member Parliament flagged off the cycle rally in presence of Dr Rupali Slathia (BCCI Coach), Sudarshan Slathia (DDC Member), Col. Jaswant Singh and NYKS Director Nisar Ahmed Butt, while DDC Chairman Keshav Dutt Sharma presided over the function.
Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar flagged off a bicycle rally from Hari Niwas Palace, organised by Department of Youth Services and Sports Jammu in collaboration with J&K State Sports Council to mark ‘World Bicycle Day’. Around 200 cyclists including students, men, women, teachers and other Government officials took part in the event.
Reviving cycling as a norm to lower global warming, World Bicycle Day was celebrated by Nehru Yuva Kendra Srinagar, Directorate of Youth Services and Sports and Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council where in about 245 Cyclists from different areas of District Srinagar both male and female participated in the event. The event was flagged off P K Pole worthy Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, from iconic location Lal Chowk Srinagar covering a distance of 7.5 Km culminated at Botanical Garden Chashmashahi Srinagar.
This rally envisages to enhance the sprit of brotherhood, nationalism and to popularised the usage of cycle to solve the dual issues of global warming and unhealthy life style.
The main aim of the event was to promote brotherhood qualities among youth and save the earth from global warming by promoting the bicycle as a means of transport.
A rally was organised by SMVDU’s NSS unit and Board for sports activities which was flagged off by Vice Chancellor, Prof RK Sinha after the song of Vande Matram, sung by the students. Around 50 cyclists from the campus participated in the event, while around 100 students march past with cyclists by raising slogans. Dean Student Welfare, Dr Hari Govind Mishra; NSS Programme Officer, Dr Rajiv Kumar; President BSA, Dr Parvez Slathia and Security Officer, Surender Singh were also present during the event.
The University of Kashmir organised a cycle race to celebrate the Day wherein 140 students from the affiliated Colleges participated in the race, which was flagged off by Registrar Dr Nisar Ahmad Mir at Nishat and culminated at Kashmir University campus. The chief guest (Registrar) also distributed prizes among the winning Colleges wherein Islamia College Srinagar bagged the first position, while the second, third and fourth positions went to Gandhi Memorial College.
World Bicycle Day was also celebrated by NSS unit of GGM Science College under the guidance of College Principal Dr Ravender Tickoo and guidance of NSS PO Dr Deepali Mahajan wherein NSS volunteers participated in the Jammu Smart City Cycle 4 Change Fit India Freedom Rider Cycle Rally which was inaugurated by the JMC Commissioner, Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The rally started from Kala Kendra and culminated at the starting point by passing through Parade and Satwari and covered 7 km distance.
The Day was also celebrated by Govt. Degree College RS Pura wherein 30 NSS volunteers participated in the cycle rally with full zeal and enthusiasm and chanted slogans to aware masses during the rally. The event was organised under the College Principal, Prof Sunil Uppal and supervision of Prof Bindu Kumari, NSS Program Officer.
NCC cadets of GDC Kathua celebrated the Day by holding a cycle rally which was flagged off by the College Principal, Prof Sumanesh Jasrotia in presence of Prof Rakesh Singh HoD Department of Chemistry and others which started from the main gate of the College and culminated at the starting points by passing through Shaheedi Chowk, Parliwand, Mukheerji Chowk, Nagri Adda and Stadium Road.
To mark the significance of the Day, a bicycle riding competition was organized on the theme “Ride Bicycle: Save Environment & Be Fit” by the GDC Vijaypur wherein NSS volunteers and students participated to spread awareness about the benefits of using a bicycle. The event was conducted under the guidance of College Principal Dr Sangeeta Sudan.
On this occasion, the GDC Jindrah organised a national level quiz competition under the supervision of College Principal, Dr Raj Shree. Around 100 students from different Schools, Colleges and Universities across the country participated in the online event wherein the winners who got 50 percent marks and above were felicitated with certificates.
GDC Basohli in collaboration with Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Basohli organized an awareness campaign to encourage the students to use bicycles to stay healthy. The event was organized under the supervision of College Principal, Dr Nidhi Kotwal and Dr Papinder Kumar wherein 30 students, NCC and NSS volunteers participated enthusiastically.
To celebrate the Day, the GDC Marh’s NSS unit and Eco Club in collaboration with Physical Education and Sports Department organised a bicycle rally under the guidance of Prof Aekta Gupta (Principal) and spread the message among the mass regarding ‘save the planet’ and paid tribute to freedom fighters.
A rally was also held by displaying placards in front of the cycles by the NSS unit of GDC Jourian in collaboration with the Activities and Cultural Affairs Committee. College Principal, Prof Kuldeep Raj Sharma motivated the students to use bicycles for short and local ridings and highlighted the benefits of cycling to make the environment clean and sustainable.
Bicycle for Change Club Kathua celebrated the Day to promote cycling culture for better health and environment. The cycle rally was flagged off by the Chief Education Officer, Praksh Lal Thapa and President of Municipal Council, Naresh Sharma.
