Wrestlers Lalita, Bajrag, Malik settle for silver in CWG

Glasgow, July 30: Indian wrestler Lalita settled for the silver medal after she lost her women’s freestyle 53kg final to Nigeria’s Odunayo Adekuoroye in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the SECC Hall here today.

Odunayo completely dominated Lalita and took just 31 seconds to seal the gold medal. The Nigerian managed to pin down the Indian and raced away with the win.

Lalita earlier cruised into the final with victory by fall over Scotland’s S Hawke. The Indian was leading 5-0 when she pinned her opponent.

Lalita’s silver was the fifth medal for India from wrestling. India had won three gold and one silver yesterday.     The bronze medals went to South Africa Mpho Madi and Canada’s Jill Gallays.

Meanwhile, another Indian wrestler Bijneesh Bajrang also won the silver medal after he lost to David Tremblay of Canada 1-12 in Men’s 61kg Final.

Earlier, Bajrang, the 2013 World Championship bronze medallist, ensured his final berth after beating Amas Daniel of Nigeria 3-2 in a hard-fought semifinal bout.   Another Indian grappler Sakshi Malik also had to settle for the silver in the 58kg category after being pinned down by Nigerian Adeniyi. The Nigerian attacked relentlessly – first one leg and then two and then the turns.   India are currently positioned in the sixth spot with a total of 40 medals – 10 gold, 19 silver and 11 bronze.
