Yatra going on smoothly, over 2.62 lakh pay obeisance

SRINAGAR:Pilgrimage to holy the Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas was going on smoothly as fresh batches left Baltal and Nunwan Pahalgam base camps early this morning.
As many as 5,024 pilgrims had darshan of the self-made Ice Shivlingam in the cave shrine yesterday, a Yatra Control Room (YCR) official said.
He said so far 2,62,359 yatris had paid obeisance at the holy cave since the commencement of the 59-day-long pilgrimage from July 2.
The official said Srinagar-Baltal base camp road was closed due to landslides, triggered by cloudburst and heavy rains in Gund area of the road.
However, the pilgrims who were stranded at Sumbal and Manigam transit camps for the past two days were allowed to move towards Baltal yesterday after the road was partially repaired.
He said 1,472 pilgrims, including women, children and sadhus, left Baltal and Domail early this morning. The yatris are expected to reach the cave shrine by this afternoon.
He said about 2,000 pilgrims also left Nunwan Pahalgam base camp for the cave shrine. The pilgrims have night halt at Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station before starting foot journey for the cave shrine.
Similarly, those who had night halt at other halting stations, including Sheshnag, Mahaguns and Panjtarni, have also started their journey towards the cave shrine early this morning. (AGENCIES)
