1.78 kgs of heroin, Rs 69 lakh cash recovered, 9 held

Srinagar, June 14: In a major breakthrough, Baramulla police today arrested 9 drug smugglers and recovered 1.78 kgs of contraband heroin along with cash amounting to Rs 69.20 lakhs from Nambla, Isham and Bandi Uri areas of Baramulla.
At Nambla Uri, police said, specific information was received by police regarding the smuggling of narcotics by Irfan Ahmad Najar son of Noor Din Najar, Mehmooda Begum, wife of Irfan Ahmad Najar & Ghulam Rasool Sheikh, all residents of Nambla Uri.
Acting swiftly, the police under the supervision of SDPO Uri Shokat Ali, assisted by SHO Uri Mohd Shafi, along with the Magistrate searched the house of Irfan Ahmad Najar.
During the search of the house, 490 grams of heroin and cash amounting Rs 6,45,200/- was recovered from the possession of Irfan Ahmad and his wife Mehmooda Begum, police said.
On disclosure of those arrested, the house of Ghulam Rasool Sheikh son of Noor Din Sheikh resident of Nambla-A was searched and during the search heroin weighing 520 grams and cash amounting to Rs 5,79,500 rupees was seized on the spot.
“During sustained questioning and on their disclosure, the house of Mohd Subhan Dar son of Abdul Aziz Dar resident of Hathlanga was also searched and contraband heroin-like substance weighing 420 grams and cash amounting to Rs 56,95,600 was seized in the presence of Magistrate,” police said.
In total, police said, contraband heroin-like substance weighing 1.430 kilograms was recovered and cash amounting to Rs 69,20,300/- as proceeds of drugs smuggling were recovered.
At Isham Uri, police said, acting on specific information regarding the smuggling of narcotics, police under the supervision of SDPO Uri assisted by SHO Uri, at a checkpoint established at Isham Crossing Uri arrested two persons who tried to flee from the spot but were apprehended tactfully.
“They have been identified as Mohd Hafeez Aabasi, son of Abdul Rashid Aabasi & Zahid Hussain Aabasi son of Abdul Rashid Aabasi, both residents of Gowaltha. During their search, 2 packets of contraband-like substance, apparently heroin weighing (65 grams along with packing) and (75 grams along with packing) respectively, were recovered,” police said.
At Bandi Rest House Uri, police said, based on specific information regarding the smuggling of narcotics, the police under the supervision of SDPO Uri and assisted by SHO PS Uri, established a checkpoint at Bandi Rest House.
During checking, as per police, one vehicle (Dumper) bearing registration number JK05D-8441 was intercepted. “The boarded persons along with the driver of the vehicle tried to flee from the spot, but the alert police party tactfully apprehended them.”
The apprehended persons have been identified as Mohd Saleem Qureashi son of Mohd Ashraf Qureashi resident of Nambla (Driver), Mohd Rafiq Awan, son of Ali Hussain Awan resident of Thajal & Afra Siyab son of Abdul Majeed Ganie, resident of Nambla.
“During the personal search of Afra Siyab, 1 packet of heroin weighing (80 grams along with packing) and 1 packet of heroin weighing (60grams along with packing) was recovered from Mohd Rafiq Awan.”
During the search of the vehicle, police said, 1 packet of contraband was recovered from the driver seat weighing 70 grams along with packing.
