1 militant killed in encounter in south Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Apr 25: One militant was killed today in a fierce encounter while others are still trapped inside a house in south Kashmir district of Shopian.

The encounter was still going on when the reports last came in.

Official sources said a search party of 44 Rashitriya Rifles (RR) came under heavy fire from a house at Karewa Manloo, Shopian in the afternoon. Security forces immediately sealed the entire area from all sides to foil escape attempt by any militant.

Reinforcement was also rushed to the area from nearby camps, they said adding firing between the militants, holed up in a house, and security forces was going on. Sources said there could be more than a militant in the  house.

Militants fired upon a poll party at Nagbal Shopian last evening killing a poll official Zia and injuring another poll official, a CRPF jawan and a police constable besides a driver.

A poll official was killed and five others, including two security personnel were injured in a militant attack after the polling yesterday.  (AGENCIES)
